Abstract

This research aims to construct and standardize a scale for the personality traits of goalkeepers in Iraq. The researcher followed a descriptive approach with its survey and correlational methods. The research population included goalkeepers in Iraqi clubs in the Iraqi Stars and Premier League divisions (257 individuals). The sample was divided into a construction sample (196 individuals) and a final application sample (120 goalkeepers). The research procedures relied on constructing a new scale consisting of four main axes (mental, physical, psychological, and social). Its items were formulated according to scientific standards and precise statistical analysis to ensure validity and reliability. In light of the analysis and discussion of the study results, the researcher was able to draw a set of conclusions, namely that goalkeepers in the Iraqi Stars League enjoy a high level of personal traits, as reflected by the high values on the personality trait scale compared to the hypothetical average, which indicates the presence of a good psychological and social balance and mental and emotional abilities that help them adapt to competitive variables, and the presence of statistically significant differences between the personality traits and the hypothetical average of traits, which indicates that positive psychological traits contribute to forming a positive self-image. Based on the results reached by the study, the researcher recommends the necessity of adopting integrated psychological training programs within the training units for goalkeepers, which are concerned with enhancing positive personal traits such as psychological resilience, self-confidence, and the ability to control emotions, and including tests of personality traits and self-concept within the tools for selecting goalkeepers in teams and clubs, in addition to physical and technical tests, given the role of these indicators in predicting performance.
